2009-10 LECTURE SERIES

Roderick Bates, LEED AP
Researcher
KieranTimberlake

Monday, Oct 19, 2009 at 6pm

Architects and designers operate within the building footprint. An immediate but limited scope at best. Yet buildings are potential springboards to address and influence events on a regional and national scale.  Researcher Roderick Bates will discuss how KieranTimberlake, through deep research and thoughtful design, generates buildings that address environmental issues on scales far beyond their physical boundaries.

Roderick Bates is a researcher at KieranTimberlake, an internationally recognized architecture firm noted for its commitment to research, innovation and invention. The firm has received over one hundred design citations including the 2008 Architecture Firm Award, the highest honor bestowed on a firm by the American Institute of Architects.  Bates has been responsible for environmental research conducted by the KieranTimberlake Research Group since 2007.

He is a LEED accredited professional and received his Master of Environmental Management from The Yale School of Forestry & Environmental Studies. While at Yale University he engaged research and field analysis pertaining to ecosystem management. His recent research initiatives with KieranTimberlake have included developing and deploying advance building monitoring sensor networks, interpreting collected data, and preparing the results for internal and external presentation.  He also assists the firm’s architectural teams through building simulation driven design evaluations, using the results to recommend design modifications to improve energy performance and thermal comfort.
