ArcheCamp Announced
for Summer 2007

ArcheCamp 2007

July 23rd – August 10th, 2007

Archeworks will offer a summer session consisting of a design / build orientation for Archeworks students who have little or no exposure to design or construction, as well as those with more experience. Students will participate in a quick design process, a charette, and then undertake a built response to a design problem. ArcheCamp will be an intensive, immersive, hands-on experience of cognitive and manual design processes and production concluding in a completed structure for human use. ArcheCamp will help incoming students develop a better understanding of the transformation of ideas into physical form for the upcoming Archeworks school year. Additionally, a series of lectures by some of Chicago’s most compelling and challenging architects and artists is scheduled.

Schedule + Locations + Amenities ArcheCamp will be held Monday, July 23rd – Friday, August 10th, 2007. Classes are scheduled Monday – Friday, daily 9am – 6pm. For the first two weeks of the session, the class will meet at Koberhof, a studio and workshop on Chicago’s southwest side, to design and prefabricate the project. Koberhof is located 100 yards from the orange line El stop at Western. Students are responsible for their own meals in Chicago. Students will have access to a microwave and refrigerator. Numerous inexpensive restaurants are within walking distance of Koberhof. Final construction and installation of the project will take place at Franconia Sculpture Park in Franconia, Minnesota during the third and final week. Attendance of the two weeks session in Chicago is mandatory, while the third week at Franconia is optional. While in Minnesota, students will camp at the park during the final installation of the project. Groceries and cooking facilities will be provided at Franconia. Communal evening meals are also provided at the park with the artists. Students are responsible for arranging their own travel to and from Franconia.

Instructor
Archeworks facilitator, Randy Kober, will be the primary instructor for the ArcheCamp summer session. Kober is an architectural design and theory professor at the Illinois Institute of Technology and has also taught at the University of Illinois at Chicago. He has been a project architect at Garofalo Architects and now founded Anarchitectures in Chicago. His building experience includes rough and finish carpentry, timber framing, furniture making, landscaping, and sheet metal work.
