Bruce Mau Delivers Lecture on Ethics in Design at Archeworks Chicago, IL – Nov 15, 2007 – It’s no secret that Bruce Mau’s arrival in Chicago is generating serious buzz in the design community. He is the latest thought leader to contribute to the The Archeworks Papers, a collection of essays on ethics in design published by Archeworks, Chicago’s alternative design school. Mau presented his essay, to be published in the fifth edition of The Archeworks Papers, on Wednesday, November 14, 2007 at 6 p.m. at Archeworks. The Archeworks Papers is a series of commentaries on ethics in design edited by Archeworks co-founder, architect Stanley Tigerman. The series, first published in 2004, commissions independent scholars to “reflect and ruminate about various matters that are close to our collective hearts” says Tigerman in the introduction to The Archeworks Papers, Volume 1, Number One. Mau’s essay, Now That We Can Do Anything, What Will We Do?, will serve as the cornerstone for the fifth issue. Tigerman and other scholars including Archeworks co-founder Eva Maddox and Robert Somol, Director of the UIC School of Architecture, will write responses to Mau’s piece and these will also be published in this fifth edition of The Archeworks Papers. The publication will be released in Spring 2008 at a reception held at Archeworks on Wednesday, April 2, 2008 at 6 p.m. Canadian designer Bruce Mau has gained international recognition for his expertise and innovation in design, notably for his work with The Institute without Boundaries (IwB), a design program founded in 2003, whose thought provoking Massive Change exhibit displayed at Chicago’s Museum of Contemporary Art last year. Bruce Mau founded his studio in Toronto in 1985. Since then, Bruce Mau Design, Inc. (BMD) has grown to a staff of forty and has gained international recognition for its expertise and innovation across a wide range of projects achieved in collaboration with some of the world’s leading architects and institutions, artists and entrepreneurs, writers, curators, academics and businesses. Archeworks honored Mau for his commitment to socially conscious design at the annual Archeworks Benefit Gala in 2007. Archeworks is an alternative design school in Chicago, co-founded by architect Stanley Tigerman and designer Eva Maddox in 1993, where students work in multidisciplinary teams with nonprofit partners to create design solutions for social concerns. Since 1994, Archeworks has paired with more than 75 community partners to complete nearly 40 community projects. There are more than 150 Archeworks alumni working in the design field, studying at top-ranking universities, and continuing to apply their Archeworks experience to make a positive impact on society. This lecture is part of the Archeworks public lecture series, which seeks to shape intellectual, social and ethical debate, and is free and open to the public. |
