Perception - "false
security" and
the re-design of helmets
2004-05
All persons moving faster than walking need helmets, from bicycling
to motorbiking to skiing. Currently the perception of safety is
a "false" perception.
The Archeworks team explored the issues of safety and good design,
designing new helmets and explore what can be added to existing helmets
for "true" safety. The team did research and analysis of
existing bicycle helmets and their related technologies; they analyzed
existing head-protecting devices and support padding utilized by other
disciplines such as football, baseball, hockey, auto and motor cross
racing, horse racing, skiing, skateboarding, slam ball, water polo,
and jai lai; they also reviewed typical bicycle riding conditions
and, more importantly, the type of accidents those conditions foster.
Using their research, the team designed and prototyped an improved
helmet technology (“iht”) package for bicycling whose
correct usage quantifiably provided an environment less likely to
attract accident conditions; and, when accidents occur, a helmet that
allowed for maximum protection given the virtually limitless number
of accident situations. Upon obtaining funds, the prototype will be
tested for marketability.
