James and Susan Green
James, age 55, has MS and uses a wheelchair, so the Homeostasis
he shares with 53-year-old Susan is a single-level structure. Says
James, "other houses we looked at would have required extensive
interior modifications--with Homeostasis we have complete control
over the interior space."
Jim and Susan enjoy city life and were pleased to find an option
that allowed them to be close to shopping and entertainment. They
built their house on an inner-city vacant lot. Jim no longer drives
but their location allows him to be close to public transportation,
which allows him a continued independence.
Jim works from home as a free-lance writer and he appreciates the
ease with which Homeostasis allows for technological updates.
"We rewired it several times to accommodate additional DSL
and cable lines. It took about 20 minutes each time." In the
summer, Jim prefers his office space to have large picture windows.
In the winter, he can quickly and easily add shuttered panels to
the outside. This provides further insulation to the room and still
allows the natural winter light to filter in.
Susan is a corporate trainer who sometimes travels. "When Susan
leaves on business, I often have a caretaker come in and our son
and his wife often visit over the holidays. With Homeostasis's
movable walls, we can quickly and easily create a space for them
without disrupting the general flow of the house."
Their current Homeostasis setup includes six 8' x 20' modules.
Adds Jim, "chances are, Susie will outlive me. If she doesn't
need all of the modules, she can easily re-sell some of them and
only have to maintain the space she needs."
