"...the longevity of modern man and the younger population's
lack of time to take care of the elderly are leading to a
profound analysis of new environments and the search for an
appropriate habitat for the older population."
-Residences for the Elderly
"Today, mobile homes shelter more than 12-1/2 million Americans
and account for 25 percent of all dwellings in North America."
- Harvard University Graduate School of Design, Double Wide, Fall 1996

WoZoCo
Apartments for the Elderly
Designer
MVRDV
Adaptability: WoZoCo was designed in such
a way that it could be inhabited by the elderly, or by younger people,
according to the needs of the population.
Relevance: WoZoCo is an example of the fact that
housing for the elderly does not have to look like the typical
version we are used to. This housing complex is a well-designed
place for someone of any age to live, rather than a place to "put
away" the elderly.

Mobile Homes
Various Designs
Adaptability: The American mobile home is the most
successful example in the world of a factory-produced building.
Its development has been shaped by demands that conventional alternatives,
sanctioned by the housing industry and its guiding institutions,
have been unable to meet. (Harvard University Graduate School
of Design, Double Wide, Fall 1996)
Mobility: The mobile home allows for multiple locations in
its useful life, which cannot be said for the standard brick and
mortar home.
Relevance: In addition to being fully transportable from
one site to the next, Homeostasis will be factory produced and will
allow for multiple modular configurations.
